Farmers’ Protest Succeeded Against Farm Laws

The farmers of Punjab and Haryana successfully fought against the farm laws. One major reason behind this success was the lack of direct financial impact on the government’s budget. The movement gained wide support and forced the government to act.

Why the Protest for MSP Failed

The same farmers went on a hunger strike demanding a legal Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops. However, this agitation failed. The reason? It had a heavy financial implication.

Income Tax Exemption Based on Economic Advice

Renowned economists and senior RBI officials suggested that income tax exemptions can increase people’s purchasing power. This leads to more spending, and in turn, higher tax revenue.

Based on this logic, the Finance Minister announced ₹1 lakh crore worth of income tax exemptions in the Union Budget on February 1. This was reported widely in newspapers.

Why Not the Same Logic for EPS-95 Pensioners?

The critical question now is: Why didn’t the same economists or RBI experts advise the government to increase the minimum pension of 80 lakh EPS-95 pensioners?

If purchasing power leads to more tax revenue, wouldn’t pensioners spending more have the same effect?

A Call for Self-Reflection by Associations

This is a moment for EPS-95 associations to self-reflect:

Do they believe only protests can achieve results?

Do they think economic expert support is not needed?

Or do they firmly believe they alone can do it?

Time for serious introspection.
