Kiranmayi: I agree, Ravi. I’ve noticed that everyone is talking about the “New Tax Regime.” Could you tell us about the first major change?
Ravi: Absolutely! The first big move is the Basic Exemption Limit. Until now, income up to ₹3 Lakhs was tax-free. This has now been increased to ₹4 Lakhs. This means you don’t have to pay a single rupee in tax on the first 4 Lakhs of your earnings.
Kiranmayi: That’s great news. But the real highlight seems to be the “Standard Deduction,” right?
Ravi: Spot on, Kiranmayi! This is the biggest relief for salaried employees. The Standard Deduction, which was previously ₹75,000, has been hiked to ₹1,00,000. This will leave more disposable income in the hands of employees.
Kiranmayi: Now Ravi, there’s a piece of news going viral on social media: “Zero tax even if your annual income is ₹13 Lakhs.” Is that actually true? What’s the math behind it?
Ravi: (Laughing) It sounds surprising, but it is 100% true, Kiranmayi! When you combine the new tax slab changes, the increased Standard Deduction, and the tax rebates, those earning up to ₹13 Lakhs per year will effectively pay zero income tax. This is truly a bumper offer for middle-class salaried professionals!
