The EPS-95 minimum pension remains a major concern for millions of retired employees across India. As of September 2026, the minimum monthly pension continues to be ₹1,000, despite long-standing demands from pensioners and employees for a substantial increase.
The demand to raise the minimum pension to ₹7,500 per month has again received attention in 2026. EPS-95 pensioners’ organisations have held protests and raised the issue before the government. The matter was also raised in the Lok Sabha on August 10, 2026. However, the government did not announce approval of a ₹7,500 minimum pension.
Why are pensioners demanding a higher minimum pension?
The ₹1,000 minimum pension has been in force since September 1, 2014. Pensioners’ organisations argue that the amount has become inadequate because the cost of essential goods, medicines, healthcare and other household expenses has increased considerably over the years. A Parliamentary Standing Committee has also recommended an urgent review of the minimum EPS pension.
The government has stated that the financial sustainability of the pension fund and its future liabilities have to be considered before making any major revision. Earlier official information also pointed to the actuarial position of the EPS fund and the need for budgetary support to maintain the ₹1,000 minimum pension.
What is the latest position?
The important point for pensioners is that ₹7,500 has not been approved as the new minimum EPS pension. Reports claiming that ₹7,500 has already been sanctioned should therefore be treated cautiously. The latest parliamentary position does not announce such a hike.
Another important development is the introduction of EPS 2026, which replaced the earlier EPS-95 framework. The minimum pension, however, remained ₹1,000, so the new scheme did not itself provide the long-awaited pension increase.
As of March 31, 2026, 85,84,604 pensioners were receiving monthly pension under EPS, according to the Labour Ministry’s parliamentary response.
