The report submitted by the Union Cabinet said that MBBS should be reduced to four and a half years and there should be a provision to work in rural areas for two years.
Three policies suggested by ministers.
- Limiting MBBS course to four years and the internship to six months.
- Shortening the MBBS to four years without an internship, offering a two-year PG course through the final year Common Exit Exam.
- Introducing a six-year integrated MBBS course. The group of ministers suggested that those who want to join this course should conduct the first special entrance test. This will result in physicians coming out with full expertise in six years.
The Union Cabinet recommended that in any of the three cases, a medical practitioner who has completed medical education should be required to work in rural areas for at least two years before being registered.
It was felt that it would be better to work in rural areas by adding another year period in addition to the one year internship period.

The Union Cabinet has recommended that the duration of the MBBS course be reduced from the current five and a half years to four and a half hours along with the internship.
It is learned that the team led by Union AYUSH Minister Shri Pad Yashonaik has submitted a report to the Central Government to shorten the duration of the course in view of the changing seasons.
The information also stated that students must be required to work in rural areas for two years before being awarded the degree, thereby increasing the availability of doctors in the villages.
The panel of ministers was of the view that the post-Kovid challenges should be used as opportunities, as part of which the medical sector should be completely purged.
It is opined that the MBBS course should focus on how well the students have acquired the skills and not on how long.
The Council of Ministers reminded that the Medical Council of India has reduced the MBBS course, which has so far lasted for fifty-four months, to 50 months (excluding internship).
Based on this, the course is close to four years, the internship was added and the decision was made to complete it in four and a half years.

- ఇంటర్న్షిప్ లేకుండా ఎంబీబీఎస్ నాలుగేళ్ళకు కుదించడం, చివరి సంవత్సరం కామన్ ఎగ్జిట్ ఎగ్జామ్ ద్వారా రెండేళ్ల పీజీ కోర్సు ఆఫర్ చేయడం.
- ఆరేళ్ల ఇంటిగ్రేటెడ్ ఎం బి బి ఎస్ కోర్స్ ప్రవేశపెట్టడం. ఈ కోర్సులో చేరాలనుకునే వారికి మొదటి ప్రత్యేక ప్రవేశ పరీక్ష నిర్వహించాలని మంత్రుల బృందం సూచించింది. దీనివల్ల ఆరు ఏళ్లలో సంపూర్ణ నైపుణ్యంతో వైద్యులు బయటకు వస్తారని పేర్కొంది.ఈ విధానంలో కూడా ఇంటర్న్షిప్ అమలు చేయకూడదని అభిప్రాయపడింది.
ఈ మూడింటిలో ఏ విధానంలో వైద్య విద్య పూర్తి చేసిన మెడికల్ ప్రాక్టీషనర్ గ నమోదు చేసుకోవడానికి ముందు రెండేళ్లు తప్పనిసరిగా గ్రామీణ ప్రాంతాల్లో పనిచేసేలా నిబంధన విధించాలని కేంద్ర మంత్రుల బృందం సిఫార్సు చేసింది.
ఏడాది ఇంటర్న్షిప్ కాలంతోపాటు, మరో ఏడాది కాలాన్ని జోడించి గ్రామీణ ప్రాంతాల్లో పని చేస్తే బాగుంటుందని అభిప్రాయపడింది.
ఎంబీబీఎస్ కోర్సు కాలపరిమితి ని ఇంటర్న్షిప్ తో కలిసి ప్రస్తుతమున్న ఐదున్నర ఏళ్ల నుంచి నాలుగున్నర గంటలకు తగ్గించాలని కేంద్ర మంత్రుల బృందం సిఫార్సు చేసింది.
మారుతున్న కాలమాన పరిస్థితులను దృష్టిలో ఉంచుకొని ఈ కోర్సు కాల వ్యవధి కుదించాలని కేంద్ర ఆయుష్ మంత్రి శ్రీ పాద్ యశోనాయక్ నేతృత్వంలోని ఆ బృందం కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వానికి నివేదిక అందించినట్లు తెలిసింది.
డిగ్రీ ప్రదానం చేయడానికి ముందు విద్యార్థులు రెండేళ్లు తప్పనిసరిగా గ్రామీణ ప్రాంతాల్లో పని చేసేలా నిబంధన విధించాలని, దానివల్ల గ్రామాల్లో వైద్యుల లభ్యత పెరుగుతుందని కూడా పేర్కొన్నట్లు సమాచారం.
కోవిడ్ అనంతర సవాళ్లను అవకాశాలుగా మలచుకోవాలని, దీనిలో భాగంగా వైద్య రంగాన్ని పూర్తిగా ప్రక్షాలించాలని మంత్రుల బృందం అభిప్రాయపడింది.
MBBS కోర్స్ ను విద్యార్థులు ఎంతకాలం అన్నది కాకుండా ఎంత మేరకు నైపుణ్యాలను అందిపుచ్చుకున్నారు అన్న దానిపై దృష్టి సారించాలని తెలిపింది.
ఇదివరకు యాభై నాలుగు నెలల పాటు కొనసాగే ఎంబీబీఎస్ కోర్సును భారత వైద్య మండలి 50 నెలలకు (ఇంటర్న్షిప్ మినహాయించి) కుదించినట్లు మంత్రుల బృందం గుర్తుచేసింది.
దీన్ని బట్టి చూస్తే కోర్స్ నాలుగేళ్లకు దగ్గరలో ఉందని,
ఇంటర్నిషిప్ నూ జత చేసి నాలుగున్నర ఏళ్లలో పూర్తయ్యేలా నిర్ణయం తీసుకోవాలని పేర్కొంది.
